About Us
Librarians For Memphis Public Library (L4MPL) was founded in April 2008 by local library professionals concerned about the direction MPLIC seemed to be lurching after long-time director Judith Drescher and her top staff were retired in late 2007. L4MPL is resolved to:
- Oppose MPLIC branch closings (threatened in Spring 2008 but averted)
- End political appointment as the sole process for filling the MPLIC Director’s job and other administrative positions within the system (ongoing)
- Work with existing professional organizations to advocate for these and other needed reforms (ongoing)
It is vital that advocacy for change come from local librarians who are not only professionals but public library patrons as well. L4MPL will be working on a number of fronts in the coming weeks to educate the Mayor, the City Council, and the citizens of Memphis on the vital importance of a healthy and accountable public library. We enthusiastically welcome the participation of individuals, professional groups, and anyone that believes libraries are a public good.
